Food is an integral part of my life - as it is an integral part of the culture I grew up in. Filipinos are known for our love of cooking and our intense urge to feed everybody. While it may be a common stereotype, it doesn't really stray that far from the truth. Not all Filipinos love to cook or eat, but food is definitely makes a big part of our daily lives.
Filipinos, in general, love to eat. We have breakfast, merienda (Spanish/Filipino for a light snack... but we typically make it another meal of its own), lunch, merienda, supper, and maybe another late night merienda. Growing up, my family loves trying out different dishes - that being said, we would love going to our local carinderias and check out new places - go to the usual street food stall and check out the one that just came up. We do the same with our friends, especially when I was in college and when I started working.
Moving to the US didn't change a thing. Clearly, the portions are bigger and so did I gain much of that portion in stored energy cells.... Here's my most recent foodventures! Thunderbird Bakery & Cafe
Located on the corner of W 6th and Knapp Street in Oshkosh, Thunderbird Bakery & Cafe is definitely one of the most popular breakfast places in town. They are open from 7am through 2pm, and you better come in early because they have one of the best bread in town. I'm saying this, and I'm not even a bread person!!
They make different bread fresh daily, and every morning there is a line. Now don't expect a fancy big place with a huge variety of dishes. Their menu is simple, but it is scrumptious to say the least. Our favorites here are the Cubano sandwich and the Horchata latte. The portions are generous and you will not be disappointed. Dumpling House
You will find the Dumpling House at the corner of 9th and Washburn, and it's pretty hard to miss!
We've come to this location before, but it used to be a Japanese Steakhouse. It then became 592 Korean BBQ - and I was super excited! Unfortunately, they closed before I could even visit, to my disappointment. However, they do have a thriving spot in Appleton. I would reckon it's probably the same owner or family, since they retained the boba cups. And OMG yes, they have great milky taro boba!
I am definitely glad we tried the Dumpling House. It's a bit on the pricier side for dumplings, although I would say it's worth it. They offer a good variety of dishes, and no, it's not limited to just dumplings. What did I try? Of course, I had to get the ramen because next to rice - noodles is life.
I don't remember exactly what Bear got, but we also ordered some soup dumplings. With how I lose track of everything, this is the newest experience for me that I forgot to take a photo of. I was just to excited to try it. If you're not familiar with soup dumplings, they are basically dumplings with soup inside the wanton wrapper. It's served fresh, still in the bamboo steamer - it's so hot but it's soooo good!
My Cooking
At the end of the day, for the most part, I have to make our meals. It doesn't hurt to experiment so I made some braised ribs and served it with some instant tonkatsu ramen. Who says you can't make it interesting?
I added some enoki and king's oyster mushrooms, and boiled eggs. I haven't tried to make marinated eggs yet, and I really should. Afterall, it pairs really well with pretty much any type of ramen or noodle soup. So that is next on my list.
More foodie experiments to try!
