It's that most wonderful time of the year....
Merry Yule!
I definitely love this season, and this year we celebrated Yule as a family, away from home, in a small, cozy cabin by the Brule River right on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan.
We decided to do something new for 2021, to get away from the bustle of the city (as if Oshkosh is super busy... it's not) - but really, to just get away from everything. I found this nice and cozy log cabin through Airbnb, and booked it way ahead of time. I was so excited to finally do something that is "ours" and maybe start a #TeamFrank tradition.
The Drive
We were scheduled to leave on the evening of Christmas Eve, since Bear was working that day. I spent all day preparing our food so I can just heat them up when we get there. We were able to leave and pack up by around 7 p.m. and guess what? There was a severe fog warning. Well, our trip was already planned and paid for - there's really no point cancelling now, besides what can some fog do right?
Well, wrong. The drive to Brule River was nerve wrecking and scary! The fog was so thick that we really couldn't even do the speed limit. You can barely see what's ahead and that was really bad...
Unfortunately, the closer we went up north, the worse the conditions got. I wasn't able to record any more videos but the roads instantly turned to sheets of ice and we were sliding! Mind you, Bear is a really skilled driver. If not for his experience, we would've ended up in a ditch. We should've stopped but there was really nowhere to stop. The next closest place was, well, the cabin that we were supposed to get to.
Thankfully, we all got there safe and sound! Just mini heart attacks along the way. Family Time!
After a good night's sleep, it's the 25th and it's time to chill, relax and be comfy with the family! For the first time, I made lasagna from scratch! I found several recipes that I sort of put together to achieve the taste I like. I probably should make it again and post the recipe, if I would remember. Knowing myself, I cook as I go and I really never keep exact measurements.
Another thing my Bear really loves and misses so much is his mom's recipe for Green Bean Casserole! Had the honor to get the recipe from her and so far, it was approved! Bear liked it and remaking the good ol' mom's recipe was a success.
And lastly, Yule would not be Yule without the Yule Log Cake :)
Yes, I know it looks scary LOL. But trust me, it was good!
At the end of the weekend, it was time to relax on our 2nd and final evening. We have to go back to the usual life, but I am definitely considering planning another Yule-out-of-town again!
